Martial Law in the Eyes of Millennials

More than four decades have passed since the declaration of Martial law, but the wounds of the victims of Marcos’ dictatorship are still open. Justice has not been served to those killed, tortured, oppressed, and forced to disappear. This era was long gone, yet we feel it is still in effect nowadays.

“Never again.”

We often hear these words from millennials. Are they just riding the anti-Marcos bandwagon, or are they sincere about this advocacy? It saddens me to see how this generation turns a blind eye to society’s current issues, which are similar to the problems in the past.

‘Nanlaban’ and ‘Na-tokhang’ are the same as the extra-judicial killings before.

‘Tokhang’ is a Visayan word that means to approach and talk, but what transpired is different from its definition. Tell me which is worse, killing secretly or under a spotlight?

During the Marcos regime, they try to censor these kinds of injustices. These are considered accomplishments rather than human rights violations in the outgoing administration. The truth is bent, and they use the law to justify the wrongdoing.

2022 marks the 50th anniversary of the Marcos Martial Law Regime and his dictatorship. No one wants to celebrate this tragic era!

I expect World War 3 between pro-and anti-Marcos forces during debates. This upcoming election is not only a political contest but a historical judgment of the millennial generation on the Marcos martial law regime. The win of the Pros will be the pain of the victims.

I know that millennials like me never lived through the Marcos years or during the EDSA revolution, but research would not hurt significantly if the nation’s future were at stake.

Like a judge presiding over court proceedings, we never experienced being in the victim’s position, but we need to research and educate ourselves to render a fair decision.

“The future is literally in our hands to mold as we like. But we cannot wait until tomorrow. Tomorrow is now.”

Eleonor Roosevelt (Human rights advocate and the longest-serving first lady of the U.S.A)

I hope we start acting today to stop these injustices and vote for suitable candidates during the election.

(I would vouch for VP Leni Robredo. I hope you vote for her, as well. You can check these links to know more about our future PRESIDENT: Leni Robredo’s Autobiography & Leni Robredo’s Accomplishments.

Never let our future children see

martial law through their eyes ever again.
